I Made It!!

I finally finished my 23 things! I really enjoyed exploring Flckr and creating my blog, even though I didn't get fancy like some bloggers.I feel alot less stressed about exploring things on the internet now, and feel confident that I can get around better. I learned that we have a tremendous internet highway to explore out on the horizon. The nice part about it is that their is something there for everyone . I think the overall program was easy to follow and would do it again time permitting. I recommend this to all new employees as part of training since we use these resources so heavily. I look forward to future classes and or programs.

These websites are great for the persons who love to listen to talking books. I am unfortunately not one of them. The technology is great though. I know that we are getting ready to test mp3 talking books on the Rolling Reader. I am interested to hear what the seniors have to say about them versus a talking book.

Podcasts

I explored podcasts and found that they were not really something I would use. I don't get to spend that much time on the computer nor do I listen to talking books. I am quite sure some people would find this useful though.

Explored travel and discovered kayak.com. This website is similar to Orbitz, except that it let me do a comparison with 2 other websites. I liked that feature, as it let me look for the lowest hotel rates and gave reviews of the hotels. Nice feature when you are traveling somewhere.

I could have used this for college many moons ago. Especially for speech class, when we had to do presentations requiring slideshows etc.. When I started college( I am dating myself now)computers were just starting to become available for the general public. I did my term papers on an electric typewriter( my son asks what's that mom). These tools make life so much easier for doing presentations that's for sure! I am glad that they are available, as my son is now the college student!

Wikis

I like the fact that libraries can set up these sites for informational purposes. As stated, wikis have pros and cons to them. If you are a student trying to collect information for a paper, I would be somewhat afraid to access a wikis pertaining to that subject for fear that the info available is incorrect. I would definitely want to make sure that my source was credible, such as a library wikis. I went to the Sandbox wiki for favorite foods and added a post . My favorite all time food is chocolate bars.

Perspectives on Web 2.0

I read the perspectives on 2.0. I have to agree with Anderson's "icebergs" . Working for the library for 20 years has shown me that we have to keep up with the latest technology, and the information products that we have available for the public to use. Libraries now need to approach things differently as far as getting info out to the public. An example of this is the silver reader going to the senior centers and bringing the library to them. Having wireless equipment on board for them to access info on, and the staff to help them understand how it all works. It's imperative that we keep moving forward.

I explored Overdrive and Netlibrary and they were great for the people who love to listen to talking books. I like to read books the old fashioned way from cover to cover. I do know several people who commute long distances in the car and they love talking books. I would definitely recommend these sites to them.

This is a fun site for music lovers. My son will love this site if he hasn't discovered it already. If for no other reason, it gives you the opportunity to listen to something that interests you before purchasing a download or the cd itself.

This website is great for organizing sites that interest you, and you can make your own tags as well. I am quite sure this would work well for businesses as well as for personal use. Nice concept.

I viewed the website but that was it for me, as I really have no use for it . I unfortunately have very little time to play on the computer, and to subscribe to others blogs would probably not happen. I guess for some it would be interesting to view .

Library Thing

This website was very interesting. Setting up an account and viewing the site was very easy. I got the link to my blog via Deb Ruth's help- thanks Deb. I like the fact that you can search for items and then read other peoples reviews. It gives the reader another outlet to find info .

This was a fun area to play in. I like the fact that I can change my Avatar whenever I feel she needs a change. I had never heard of this site before but am glad I know about it now. As you can see I like the beach .

Bloglines & RSS Feeds

I understand the basically what bloglines and RSS feeds are and how they work. It's not something I would use on a regular basis, as I still prefer to read a newspaper or watch the morning news on a daily basis. The library related blogs had some interesting links, but a librarian would probably find them more useful than me.

This my newest technology purchase that we made before going to Alaska. A friend of ours recommended the Canon Powershot Digital Elph 850 series to us. It is a wonderful compact camera. I haven't learned everything about it yet, but learned enough to take some awesome pics in Alaska. Memory cards are a great invention too, as we had to download our card 2x when it was full. Not having to carry around film or disposable cameras makes the expense of a digital camera worth the money.

I forgot to add that while visiting Flickr, I opened an account so that I could post pictures to friends and family. We recently went to Alaska in July. I have 1400 pictures to look at, and need to pick out my favorites. Once that is done, I hope to post these so that my traveling friends can view them. Having this technology will make it much easier to share these. Visted mashup of librarian trading cards. Viewed NextGen photostream. Very interesting. I actually might be becoming tech savvy! Who knew?

Playing with Flickr Technology 8/27/07

I found this picture while exploring Flickr. My husband and I went to Neuschwanstein Castle back in 1984, with a group from HCC. I had just finished taking a class in Art History, and really wanted to see something of the world. Our trip took us to Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. I loved seeing all the beautiful castles and the Alps. It's a must see if you like to travel.

7 1/2 Lifelong Learning Habits 8/27/07

The easiest learning habit for me is "begin with the end in mind." I love to take something that interests me and see it happen, such as cooking something unusual. The internet has made cooking very so much more fun to explore.

The hardest learning habit for me is "use technology to your advantage." I have used the internet to some extent, but do not get to play in that realm as often as I would like to. Technology is moving at such a fast pace that trying to keep up can be somewhat daunting. My example of this is something that some of you can relate to. I have three remote controls- one for the TV, the DVD player, and for the surround sound. I would love to figure out how to program all of this to one remote-no luck so far.

Hey, Just wanted to say that I thought the Tech Fair was a good intro to all the technology available to us. I must say I am terribly behind the times. It's great that we get to experiment with some of it at work.
